2011 was an exciting year for M2M, kicked off by a great deal of attention and recognition at Mobile World Congress. Though expectations of world domination have not quite been fulfilled just yet, a look back over 2011 certainly shows plenty of momentum, as operators, device manufacturers and enterprises increasingly reveal ever more sophisticated plays in the market, with innovations ranging across healthcare, telematics, Consumer Electronics, Smart Grid and myriad other verticals.

Telematics has the potential to revolutionize the automotive industry in the same way that smartphones have revolutionized the telecoms industry. According to reports by ABI Research, a surge in innovation is expected to see factory-installed telematics systems leap from 10 percent, as recorded in 2010, to more than 62 percent by 2016.
By offering installed telematics systems, car manufacturers create a new communications channel to their customers and, in doing so, create an opportunity to optimize customer loyalty and buy-in through CRM upgrades and providing a more personalized service.

When most people think of home automation, they think of the luxury surveillance systems and hi-tech gadgets we see in the homes of the rich and famous, or the talking toasters, self-cleaning floors and robo-maids that grace our children's sci-fi cartoons.
In reality, it is a technology that has been around for decades and is now being driven by consumer demand for convenience, security and energy efficiency – delivering an overall sense of 'peace of mind' that comes from allowing home owners to be everywhere at once.

Over the last few months I've read several articles which addressed the subject of M2M in the cloud. However, while touching on the benefits of this approach, they couldn't help getting tied up with "how it all works". While understanding the technology behind M2M in the cloud is important, if you've been considering using a Cloud-based M2M platform then having a clear picture of the practical benefits you should be realising is in fact the first step.

Last month, I willingly gave Apple £25. In return, I received several songs, a couple of movies for those long plane rides and a few apps for my kids’ favorite toy – the iPad. All at the exact moment that I wanted them. However, if you had asked me at the beginning of the month to pay that money in advance for the promise of some great content in return, I would have steadfastly refused.

Service optimization tools (SOTs) may provide a means for traditional OSS/BSS vendors to re-invigorate their efforts to gain traction in the cellular M2M market, in which they are currently regarded as playing "catch up". The key idea is that SOTs form a layer between the M2M service delivery platforms (SDPs) that are either built in-house by the mobile network operator (MNO) or are acquired from third-party firms, such as Jasper Wireless, and the MNO's core network.

Machina Research defines M2M connections as “Connections to remote sensing, monitoring and actuating devices, tougher with associated aggregation devices” but really the term "M2M" is a convenient way for the telecoms industry to think about an opportunity associated with providing connectivity to devices to support many different applications across a variety of industries. We think that the market for M2M is comprised of 15 segments.

The concept of Machine-to-Machine communications, or M2M, spans an almost limitless number of vertical applications and markets, and arguably that is because fundamentally M2M remains a concept; any communication between two devices could be classes as M2M. However, the commercial conditions that stimulate growth in particular sectors using M2M technologies have conspired to shine a spotlight on this nebulous concept and draw attention to specific, enabling features.
For example, Macario Namie, senior director of product marketing at Jasper Wireless said, "The term makes it easy for the telecommunications industry to describe a common set of technologies across disparate vertical industries. But outside of this ecosystem, there is no company that classifies itself as an M2M company…"

If some projections are to be believed, in the not too distant future we will live in a world of 50 billion connected devices. Making this happen will not be simple, however, and will require a completely new way of working from the mobile operators that want to make money from this explosion in connectivity.

…operators could deliver a profit margin if they make full use of their existing infrastructure. “M2m-related data does not necessarily have a negative impact on the peak-hour dynamics of a mobile network, so adding small amounts of m2m traffic can yield positive cash flow for a carrier with minimal network-related costs,” says Analysys Mason in its report.
Namie at Jasper Wireless says as a result, “M2m can be very high margin, even if it is low ARPU.”

Based on revenue per user alone, the market for machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies may not seem viable. However, when low churn and low acquisition costs are taken into account, the potential of M2M is clear. The key metric that operators need to consider is margin. But first they must take some crucial steps.
