Free, standards-based interface shaves up to six months off network connectivity development time and enables remote device management of connected machine-to-machine and consumer electronic devices
Sunnyvale USA, September 8, 2010 – Jasper Wireless today announced Jasper Link, a software-based network adapter that simplifies the process of building and managing connected devices. Jasper Link enables intelligent mobile network connectivity for machine-to-machine (M2M) and consumer electronic devices, reducing the time device developers spend on network connectivity issues and providing always-on remote device management capabilities.
There is a new generation of connected devices being launched, including eReaders, automotive telematics, gaming, mobile healthcare (mhealth), and tracking devices. Such devices are developed by companies with expertise in their respective sectors, but who often lack the necessary wireless networking experience. As a result, devices often do not perform properly under various network conditions, causing significant connection problems once in the field. According to research by Jasper Wireless, over 60% of connected device launches are delayed because of application redesign needs arising from such issues. Additionally, up to 80% of device applications may show ‘aggressive’ behavior when constantly trying to connect to the mobile network, causing an excessive signaling load on the mobile network and consuming excessive power from the device.
“Time and time again, we see connected device manufacturers miss their target launch dates because their devices are not production ready, causing a significant loss in revenue. Many device developers, who are skilled at designing their own applications, often lack the wireless expertise needed to successfully connect devices – and keep them connected in the field,” said Daniel Collins, CTO, Jasper Wireless. “Over the past six years, Jasper Wireless has worked with hundreds of device developers to help them address this challenge. Now, Jasper Link brings that experience and expertise to the application developer in the form of an off-the-shelf adapter that they can include within their product.”
The Jasper Link network adapter ensures device performance; it simplifies the process of connecting devices by providing an out-of-the-box software-based network adapter and reduces the development cycle of connected devices by up to six months. Jasper Link handles the wireless network interaction, eliminating the need for the application developer to understand the nuances of wireless network behavior. Instead of programming complicated legacy AT commands, developers need only point their application to simple yet powerful open APIs.
“Our customers want to enjoy content – in this case digital pictures – on their personal digital photo frames in order to stay in touch with family and friends,” said Neil Yarian, VP of Business Development, Pandigital. “To do this, we needed a reliable and stable mobile data connection. We believe that Jasper Link is the solution and solves a real need by greatly reducing and simplifying Pandigital’s product development cycle. As a result, we can offer our customers a wirelessly-connected digital photo frame that is incredibly intuitive, fun-to-use and reliable.”
"Despite its perceived simplicity, establishing reliable wireless communication for M2M devices can be challenging - especially for first time developers working with GSM/UMTS technologies. Cinterion is proud to cooperate with Jasper Wireless to solve this challenge. As a result, Jasper Link has been successfully tested using Cinterion modules. This winning combination allows developers to maintain focus on the value-added benefits of their devices, while minimizing their time-to-market by ensuring fast and efficient development efforts," said Loic Bonvarlet, Software Application Engineering Manager, Cinterion.
“Almost all major network operators recognize the opportunity connecting millions of devices to their networks represents, but in order to capitalize on the growth of M2M, they will need to provide rich application and device development environments. At the same time they face the challenge of maintaining network integrity and performance. Network adapters, such as Jasper Link, will be valuable tools that enable service providers to support their developer partners and onboard a multiplicity of devices, allowing them to meet varying customer demands and maintain network service levels”, commented Evan Kirchheimer, Practice Leader for enterprise services at Ovum.

Availability and Pricing
Because Jasper Link is designed using industry standards, it can be used on any device that will connect to a GSM/UMTS network. Jasper Wireless will license Jasper Link free of charge to all users of the Jasper platform. Jasper Wireless expects to make Jasper Link publicly available to all developers by the end of 2010. Developer kits, featuring full access to the Jasper platform, can be ordered at http://m2m.com/community/developer-kits.
